Iconic and impressive, the five rhinoceros species demonstrate both remarkable recovery stories and tragic losses. In Africa, the Southern white rhino has recovered from a mere 50 individuals to more than 15,000 today, whilst the Northern white rhino is represented by just two females and thus effectively extinct as a breeding population.

In Asia, the Greater one-horned rhino has recovered from fewer than 200 individuals to more than 4,000, whilst the Sumatran and Javan rhinos today teeter on the very edge of extinction as some of the most endangered mammals on earth. With fewer than 28,000 rhinos remaining in total across all five species, these animals are at risk from transnational organised crime, the genetic risks that come with such small, isolated populations, and habitat transformation or loss.

Here to tell that story is Jimmy Rutherford of Save the Rhino International, who will speak about the extraordinary efforts and innovations being made to conserve and recover rhinos across Africa and Asia. Jimmy will highlight that with persistent support and action, rhinos can be protected, reintroduced to new habitats, and put on the road to recovery.

Dublin Zoo’s DES approved week-long summer course 2026:
Cultivating the Next Generation of Conservationists

This course aims to provide participants with active engagement in teaching and learning about Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with an emphasis on conservation education. It provides participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to teach about nature and conservation in their classrooms. The course will assist teachers in fostering positive connections to nature in their classrooms and motivating their students towards pro-environmental actions.

Topics will be delivered by expert facilitators in our Conservation Education Centre and from our immersive living classroom, the grounds of Dublin Zoo. Teachers participating will have exclusive access to our state-of-the-art teaching spaces as well as the opportunity to explore the zoo after the daily programme.

Note: this course is aimed at those who teach 3rd – 6th class but all teachers are welcome.

SUMMER CAMPS JULY & AUGUST 2026

Dublin Zoo’s summer camps are designed for children aged 7 – 12 years old to have fun learning about the animals at Dublin Zoo, getting an introduction to conservation and gaining an overall appreciation for wildlife.

This weeklong camp includes exciting hands-on activities, craft projects and adventures through the Zoo (no direct contact with animals).

• Time: 10.00am – 2.30pm daily Monday to Friday
• Age: 7 – 12 years (children will be assigned to age-related groups)
• Cost: €155 (annual pass holders) €170 (non-annual pass holders)
